ABGA member Elizabeth Mobley recently represented the Tennessee Meat Goat Association (TMGA) in Washington, D.C., at meetings with the USDA and White House staff as an invited guest of Tennessee Commissioner of Agriculture Andy Holt. The visit provided an opportunity to bring producers’ concerns directly into conversations about agricultural programs, policies, and the industry's future. Discussions addressed several priorities for meat goat producers, including rising diesel and production costs, expanded cost-share opportunities, and the need for a national meat goat program focused on producer education and industry development. Participants also discussed increasing access to local, domestic, and international markets and strengthening resources for producers across Tennessee and the United States.
For Mobley and TMGA, the visit reflected the purpose of representation: listening to producers and carrying their concerns to the places where agricultural decisions are made. It also highlighted why involvement in state associations matters. By participating, members help identify shared challenges, shape priorities, and give their industry a stronger collective voice.
That involvement extends to local and state government. Building relationships with elected officials and agricultural leaders, attending meetings, and sharing firsthand experiences help decision-makers understand the needs of meat goat operations. Consistent participation keeps the industry visible and helps connect producers with programs and opportunities that can support their success.
Mobley looks forward to building on the conversations started in Washington. Her experience is a reminder that advocacy begins with producers willing to get involved—and that continued engagement through associations and government helps ensure meat goat farmers have a voice in the future of American agriculture.
Mobley would like to express her appreciation to Commissioner Andy Holt and President Trump for the invitation and for helping ensure the meat goat industry had a seat at the table.
ABGA would like to thank Mobley for her representation and look forward to working alongside her leadership on issues that can positively impact the entire industry!
